Pollination runs failing

Hi @mostapha,

We had been having a lot of fun with the pollination workflows lately. However, all the recent runs on the pollination cloud (Pollination Cloud App) has been failing. The simulations ran perfectly on my system using openstudio. Could you please check what could be the issue and if we are missing something.

Hi @anubis,

Glad to hear that Pollination is serving your workflows well.

I checked the runs and they all fail at the Solar Reflection Factor calculation. If I have to guess this is happening because there are non-convex geometries in your model and the shadow calculation is set to use a pixel-based method that needs GPU. Our instances don’t provide GPUs and that is causing this issue.

That said, the lack of GPU should only switch to the older method for shadow calculation. I’m not sure what is happening here. The error file is also not as helpful. There are warnings about faces with possible wrong direction but that shouldn’t stop the simulation from running.

@chriswmackey, do you know why this might be happening? Here is a sample run.

I’m going to check the logs on the backend to see if I can find additional information about the issue.

Actually, I can see the error message now. It’s happening in the OpenStudio workflow. @chriswmackey, here is the error message:

/workspace/output/run/in.sh: line 4: 36 Segmentation fault
"/home/ladybugbot/ladybug_tools/openstudio/EnergyPlus/energyplus" -w "/workspace/weather.epw" -i "/home/ladybugbot/ladybug_tools/openstudio/EnergyPlus/Energy+.idd" -x

There is also this error.

Hi @mostapha, so the runs ran successfully in two of my colleague’s pollination account using the same model and script. However. no runs are running from my system. I recently installed the latest developer version. could that be the case?

Update: Issue resolved. After reinstalling an older version the cloud simulation ran perfectly

Hi @anubis,

Great to know that the issue has been resolved but not ideal for us! :upside_down_face: Can you tell me what version didn’t work and what version worked for you?

Also, how do you set up the simulation? Is it coming from Rhino or Grasshopper? If we can do a comparison between the input files we should be able to find the cause of this problem. Thank you for your help to find the bug.

I tried to recreate both runs on my side and interestingly enough both of them failed. @antoinedao or @tyler can you have a look at some point? Here are the runs:

https://app.pollination.cloud/projects/ladybug-tools/demo/jobs/5669f443-0497-49ba-afbe-4dba01b9eda6/runs/3b254945-3413-5afd-adfb-87e315d85902?tab=debug

Pollination Cloud App

Another issue that I noticed is that I cannot cancel the job from either Pollination or Argo. It goes through all the retries before getting the signal. I will try to run these locally and see if I can recreate the issue.

cc: @chriswmackey

I could recreate the issue locally. It has to do with an output file eplustbl.htm that doesn’t get created.

@chriswmackey, I imagine something goes wrong during the simulation and that’s why the output is not created. The error message file is not really helpful.

@anubis, I noticed the solve adjacency hasn’t been resolved between the zones. You may want to do that first before running the rest of the studies.

Hm. The eplustbl.htm is technically an optional output, though we always request it by default and I didn’t really expose the option to de-select it in Grasshopper. So I haven’t yet updated the recipe to have it be optional and I should do this soon. Maybe Mingbo exposed the option to de-select the html file in Rhino… But it looks like you didn’t de-select it for this simulation (I don’t see any custom SimulationParameters uploaded). Let me investigate more.

Also, the second error that you got there @mostapha , is because you’re running the IDF with an incompatible version of EnergyPlus (you’re using 9.4 but you should be using 9.5).

Hi @anubis! This was one of those cases that we had to test all the parameters to find the reason.

The change is not because of the older version versus the newer version of the plugin. In all the successful runs you are overwriting the simulation parameters input which sets the solar distribution calculation to MinimalShadowing. The default is FullExteriorWithReflections.

Because of the size of your model and the number of apertures and polygons, this makes a huge difference in both time and memory usage. When running it locally the run uses about 2 GB of RAM which is more than the 1 GB default RAM that Pollination makes available during the runs.

This is something for us to improve. See the update below . Meanwhile, you can use the latest version of the plugin as long as you adjust the default Solar Distribution.

UPDATE: @antoinedao checked the specific run and it is not a memory issue. The run ends before getting even close to using all the resources. We need to check on the EnergyPlus side to see why this model fails with a more complicated solar distribution and find better solutions to resolve it.

Hi @chriswmackey yes, I didn’t deselect it. But strange, it was running perfectly on my colleague’s laptop using the same script and model.

We had used a grasshopper workflow to get a hbjson file and modify it and then run it on the cloud.
